Canada Says Mideast Conflict Highlights Flaws in International System

(MENAFN) Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney described the recent military escalation in the Middle East on Tuesday as “another example of the failure of the international order,” according to reports.

"Canada has long seen Iran as the principal source of instability and terror in the Middle East," he said, noting that Iran and "its proxies have murdered hundreds, including Canadian civilians, and caused untold suffering for millions of people in the Middle East and beyond."

Carney emphasized Canada’s support for preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and for stopping its regime from threatening global peace and security. "Canada is taking the world as it is, not passively waiting for a world we wish to be," he added.

"We do, however, take this position with regret, because the current conflict is another example of the failure of the international order," he said.

Highlighting ongoing international efforts, Carney remarked that despite UN Security Council resolutions, the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and diplomatic engagements, "Iran's nuclear threat remains."

He criticized the recent actions of the United States and Israel, noting that "Now the United States and Israel have acted without engaging the United Nations or consulting allies, including Canada," and reminded that "international law binds all belligerents."

Carney also condemned "the strikes carried out by Iran on civilians and civilian infrastructure across the Middle East," and urged all involved parties to adhere to international rules of engagement. "We implore all parties, including the United States and Israel, to respect the rules of international engagement," he said.
