Lebanon’s PM Holds Emergency Cabinet Meeting

(MENAFN) Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam convened an emergency Cabinet meeting early Monday in response to intense Israeli attacks on multiple areas, including Beirut, according to reports.

Salam summoned his ministers to the presidential palace at 8 a.m. local time (0600 GMT) to review developments since the previous night and discuss government measures in response to the escalating situation.

The emergency session follows heightened tensions after rockets were fired from southern Lebanon toward northern Israel. Salam described the attacks as an “irresponsible and suspicious act” that threatens Lebanon’s security and provides Israel with a pretext for further strikes.

“Whoever is behind it, the launches threaten Lebanon’s safety and stability,” he said, warning that Lebanon “will not allow the country to be dragged into new adventures” and pledging that authorities will take all necessary steps to identify those responsible and protect the Lebanese people.

The rocket fire was claimed by Hezbollah, which stated it targeted an Israeli missile defense site near Haifa using rockets and drones. In response, the Israeli military carried out airstrikes across Lebanon early Monday after intercepting a projectile fired from Lebanese territory, noting that additional rockets landed in open areas without causing injuries or damage.

Israeli authorities also warned residents in 53 villages across southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley to evacuate and maintain a distance of at least 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) in anticipation of further attacks.
