Trump Says Willing to Hold Talks with Iran’s New Leadership

(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump announced Sunday he has agreed to engage in renewed nuclear negotiations with Iran, following devastating joint U.S.-Israeli military strikes that killed several senior Iranian officials — including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Speaking to a magazine in a phone interview, Trump confirmed Tehran had reached out first. "They want to talk, and I have agreed to talk, so I will be talking to them," he said, without identifying a specific Iranian counterpart for the planned discussions.

Trump placed responsibility squarely on Tehran for the current crisis, suggesting the situation could have been avoided. "They should have done it sooner. They should have given what was very practical and easy to do sooner. They waited too long," he said.

When pressed on whether the talks could take place within two days, Trump declined to commit. "I can't tell you that," he said.

The President also acknowledged that a number of Iranian officials previously involved in diplomacy had been killed in the strikes. "Most of those people are gone. Some of the people we were dealing with are gone," he said. "That was a big hit," he added, referring to the joint Israeli-U.S. strikes on Iran starting on Saturday.

When asked whether new Iranian threats against American soil had emerged since the offensive began, Trump remained guarded. "I don't want to tell you that," he said.

Despite the escalating military conflict, Trump expressed confidence that the strikes would not derail Republican momentum ahead of U.S. midterm elections, and suggested the impact on oil markets — set to reopen Sunday night — would be more contained than widely feared, with less economic fallout for American consumers than some analysts had projected.

Meanwhile, hours before Khamenei's death was formally confirmed, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi signaled a willingness to ease tensions. Speaking to media, Araghchi said Iran is "certainly interested for de-escalation," though he dismissed Trump's calls for regime change as a "mission impossible."
