Modi Praises India-Israel Ties in Historic Knesset Address
(MENAFN) In a landmark moment, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the growing bond between India and Israel during his historic address to the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, on Wednesday.
Modi emphasized that the two countries share “ties that go back more than 2,000 years,” highlighting the deep-rooted historical connection during his two-day visit to Israel. This occasion marks the first time an Indian prime minister has addressed the Knesset.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also spoke to lawmakers, expressing that India “stood by” Israel.
Modi voiced support for US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace initiative, describing it as a plan that “offers a pathway.” He added that the proposal “holds the promise of a just and durable peace for all the people of the region, including by addressing the Palestine issue.”
Addressing the suffering in Israel, Modi said: “We feel your pain, we share your grief. India stands with Israel firmly, with full conviction in this moment and beyond."
According to reports, Israel’s military operations in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of more than 72,000 people—predominantly women and children—and left over 171,000 injured since October 2023.
On the topic of India-Israel collaboration, Modi emphasized economic and technological cooperation, saying: “We are committed to expanding trade, strengthening investment flows, and promoting joint infrastructure development." He noted that both nations are actively negotiating a comprehensive free trade agreement, which he believes “will unlock the vast untapped potential in our trade relationship.”
Highlighting Israel’s contribution to India’s agricultural technology, Modi also referenced defense and security collaboration, pointing to a pact signed last November designed to enhance cooperation in these strategic areas.
