Dutch Study Shows Common Concern Over AI’s Impact on Employment

(MENAFN) A newly released study by Statistics Netherlands indicates that a substantial majority of adults in the Netherlands anticipate workforce disruption driven by artificial intelligence. The findings, published Wednesday, highlight broad unease about AI’s influence on both job security and professional competence.

According to the survey, approximately three in four respondents expect AI systems to eliminate positions across various sectors. In addition, nearly half believe the technology will diminish the appeal of certain professions by automating core responsibilities.

Commenting on the findings, Luuk Hovius of CBS stated: “Exactly which tasks could be taken over isn’t entirely clear yet.” He added, “You could think of administrative roles, but also some care tasks that could be taken over by robots. Or consider self-driving cars that could assist parcel delivery drivers. That’s very difficult to predict, because we can’t see how the technology will evolve.”

Concerns extend beyond employment levels. The data show that 64% of participants think AI could weaken employees’ knowledge base and practical skills. Hovius pointed out that repetitive or structured tasks—such as typing, drafting text, performing calculations, and coding—are increasingly candidates for automation.

“You don’t have to do that coding yourself; you can assign it to AI,” he said, cautioning that dependence on automated tools may gradually erode hands-on proficiency.

The survey further reveals that more than three-quarters of Dutch adults are worried about AI’s broader societal consequences. At the same time, fewer than half expressed confidence that the technology would effectively tackle long-standing structural issues like labor shortages or sluggish productivity growth.

Overall, the results reflect a population that recognizes AI’s transformative potential but remains skeptical about its net benefits for the labor market and society at large.
