Philippine Police Assure Peaceful Observance Of Ramadan And Lent

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Various police, military and civilian officials assured that the observance of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan and the Christian season of Lent in the Philippines would be peaceful and orderly.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) said it has intensified security measures around and near mosques and Muslim communities as early as last week leading to the start of Ramadan on Thursday.

The PNP said it has activated a nationwide security plan characterised by increased police visibility in major transport hubs, places of worship, and popular tourist spots.

The police said that the security plan is also in place for the season of Lent in the predominantly Christian country. Lent simultaneously started with Ramadan on Thursday, February 19.

Safe worship and reflection

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez, Jr. said the plan is to ensure safe worship and reflection during this period.

“Police visibility and community engagement are our priority. We are deploying a sufficient number of personnel, including our Salaam Police Center units, to mosques and (Christian) churches nationwide,” Nartatez said.

“We are implementing real-time security adjustments and coordinating with local religious leaders to manage the crowds and prevent any opportunistic crimes,” he added.

Nartatez said the PNP set up 24/7 police assistance desks near major cathedrals and mosques to provide immediate help to devotees.

In Muslim Mindanao, the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) committed to supporting security missions of the police and the military during the twin seasons.

“Ramadan is a holy month in Islam. The Moro National Liberation Front shall help the police and military and local government units make it peaceful,” MNLF chairman and Bangsamoro Labor and Employment Minister Muslim Sema said.

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front as well as various civilian officials also vowed to cooperate in maintaining law and order in Muslim communities for the whole duration of Ramadan.

Lt. Gen. Donald Gumiran, commander of the Western Mindanao Command of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, said he appreciates the support of various Muslim officials.

“Our units in the Bangsamoro region...shall also embark on community projects for Muslim communities during the month-long fasting season,” Gumiran added.
