Alex Simpson
- Associate Professor in Criminology, Macquarie University
Alex Simpson is an Associate Professor and Discipline Chair in Criminology at Macquarie University, Sydney. His research focuses on the intersection of space, cities and crime, with particular expertise in financial crime and the cultures of elite institutions.
Using ethnographic methods, Alex examines how power and inequality operate within urban financial landscapes. He completed his PhD at the University of York and has published widely in journals including Sociology, Cities, and Ethnography. His books include Harm Production and the Moral Dislocation of Finance (Emerald, 2021) and Hauntology: An Introduction for Criminologists (Routledge, 2025).
Alex's work has also appeared in public editorials across The Guardian, CNN, and The Sydney Morning Herald, and he is a regular contributor to the ABC.
He is co-host of the criminology podcast Crime,Actually.
