Washington Unveils New Penalties Over Iran’s Covert Energy Trade
(MENAFN) The United States State Department revealed on Friday a new round of punitive measures aimed at companies, people, and ships allegedly involved in the illegal commerce of Iranian crude oil, refined fuels, and petrochemical materials.
According to an official statement, the department imposed sanctions on 15 organizations, two persons, and 14 maritime vessels identified as operating within Iran’s so-called “shadow fleet."
Officials argued that the designated parties have played a role in financing Tehran’s agenda, stating, "These targets have generated revenue that the regime uses to conduct its malign activities," it said.
Rather than directing resources toward public well-being or repairing deteriorating domestic infrastructure, the department asserted that Tehran "continues to fund destabilizing activities around the world and step up its repression inside Iran."
The statement further cautioned that Washington will persist with enforcement actions for as long as Iran seeks to bypass restrictions in order to earn income from oil and petrochemical sales that back "oppressive behavior, terrorist activities and proxies."
