Shamkhani Rules Out Sending Enriched Uranium Abroad Before Talks

(MENAFN) A senior adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader said Tuesday there is no justification for sending enriched uranium outside the country, as Tehran prepares to restart nuclear negotiations with the United States in Istanbul later this week, according to reports.

Ali Shamkhani stated that Iran sees no need to transfer its enriched material abroad, despite the issue being one of the main points of contention ahead of the upcoming talks. The dispute centers on Iran’s stockpile of around 400 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent purity, which US officials have repeatedly demanded be removed from the country, as stated by reports.

Shamkhani argued that Iran has the technical ability to lower enrichment levels to 20 percent, a move he said would eliminate the rationale for exporting the material. However, he underlined that such a step would not come unconditionally, stressing that it must be “met with reciprocal concessions and compensation.”

A day earlier, Ali Bagheri-Kani, the deputy head of Iran’s top security body, also rejected claims that the enriched uranium would be transferred abroad. He said progress with Washington remains possible through negotiations, provided the “atmosphere of threats” is brought to an end, according to reports.

Shamkhani, who is a senior member of the newly formed National Defense Council established after the 12-day war with Israel, reiterated that Iran’s defense doctrine prohibits both the production and possession of nuclear weapons. He said Tehran made this position clear during earlier rounds of talks, which stalled following last June’s conflict, emphasizing that Iran neither seeks nuclear arms nor intends to manufacture or store them.

Addressing concerns over Iran’s accumulation of uranium enriched to 60 percent, Shamkhani said the material “was not produced for military purposes,” adding that the country’s nuclear activities “is peaceful and its capabilities are indigenous.”
