Turkey Backs Measures for Stability, Territorial Integrity in Syria
(MENAFN) Türkiye supports all measures that contribute to calm and order in Syria while safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity and political cohesion, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said after a Cabinet session in Ankara on Monday, according to reports.
Speaking in a nationally broadcast address, Erdogan stressed that Ankara views constructive steps in Syria as legitimate so long as they protect the country’s unity. "For us, any step that contributes to peace and stability in Syria and that guarantees Syria’s territorial integrity and political unity is reasonable and acceptable," he said.
The Turkish leader said recent understandings mark a turning point for Syrians, cautioning that any attempt to derail this process would fail. He underlined Ankara’s desire to see stability return quickly next door, saying, "As Türkiye, we sincerely want our neighbor Syria to restore domestic peace as soon as possible," as stated by reports.
Erdogan added that Türkiye’s broader regional approach is based on encouraging harmony, reconciliation, and cooperation among societies throughout the region. He warned that instability beyond Türkiye’s borders inevitably affects its own security, noting, "If there is fire, conflict, or war beyond our borders, Türkiye cannot feel secure."
He also emphasized that resolving Syria’s crisis must rest on the principle of unified authority and territory, highlighting the importance of "one army, one state, and one Syria."
Reaffirming Ankara’s stance against violence, Erdogan said Türkiye would oppose those who profit from conflict and instability, declaring, "Türkiye will stand firmly against merchants of blood who fuel conflict, invest in tension, and disregard human life."
According to earlier announcements, Syrian Interior Ministry forces were set to enter the city of Hasakah at the end of January under a ceasefire and broader integration arrangement reached between Damascus and the YPG. The deal reportedly provides for public institutions in Hasakah, previously under YPG control, to be merged with state structures, with existing staff incorporated into the government payroll.
