Türkiye Urges EU to Advance Membership

(MENAFN) The Turkish Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEIK) has sent a formal letter to European Union leaders, urging the initiation of Türkiye's EU membership process, the modernization of the Customs Union, and the enhancement of bilateral cooperation.

The correspondence, drafted by DEIK through the Türkiye-Europe Business Councils, was endorsed by the heads of business councils from 26 EU member nations and directed to EU officials. The letter was also reported by a media outlet.

In Istanbul on Friday, a press conference titled Türkiye-EU: From Dialogue to Action – An Open Letter to EU Leaders was organized to present the contents of the letter.

During the event, DEIK President Nail Olpak emphasized that the entire DEIK organization backs this initiative, highlighting the delays faced in both EU membership negotiations and the updating of the Customs Union.

Olpak stressed that Türkiye and the EU maintain strong ties despite various challenges, noting that the current discussions focus not only on Customs Union reforms but also on Türkiye’s aspiration to fully integrate into the European framework.

He pointed out that the country is navigating a period of global uncertainty and called for the modernization of the Türkiye-EU Customs Union. Olpak also raised concerns regarding visa policies and the implications of the EU's recently introduced Carbon Border Adjustment mechanism.

Furthermore, Olpak remarked that EU free trade agreements with nations outside the Customs Union have repercussions for Türkiye. He specifically mentioned potential consequences stemming from EU deals with South American Mercosur countries and India.
