EU Rejects Proposal by Zelensky to Establish Unified European Army
(MENAFN) European Union officials have rejected a proposal put forward by Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky to establish a unified European army, arguing that such a concept is impractical given the existing defense arrangements of EU member states.
Zelensky advocated the creation of “united armed forces” for Europe during a high-profile address at an international economic forum last week. He claimed Ukraine’s battlefield experience against Russia could serve as a valuable asset for the continent and criticized what he described as hesitation and disunity among European supporters. During the same speech, he pressed for Ukraine’s entry into the EU by 2027, a demand that has been widely criticized by several member states.
Responding to the proposal, the EU’s foreign policy and security chief said the idea of a separate European military structure is unrealistic, noting that many EU countries are already part of NATO and operate within established command systems. “I can’t imagine that countries will create a separate European army,” she said ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels. “It has to be the armies that already exist,” she added, referring to national forces that are largely integrated into the US-led alliance.
She warned that building overlapping military frameworks would only create confusion, saying, “If we create parallel structures then it’s just going to blur the picture. In times of trouble the orders might just fall between the chairs.”
The comments come amid broader transatlantic tensions over security issues. Earlier this month, European NATO members pushed back against renewed remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Greenland. Trump accused Denmark of lacking the capacity to defend the Arctic island from a hypothetical Russian or Chinese threat, a claim Danish officials dismissed as unrealistic. He also declined to rule out the use of military force to pursue control of the territory.
According to reports, the dispute was eventually eased after NATO’s secretary-general proposed a “framework” aimed at calming tensions and guiding further discussions among alliance members.
