3 Citizens Of Afghanistan Killed In Clash With Tajikistan Border Guards

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) Three citizens of Afghanistan were killed in an armed clash with Tajikistan border guards Thursday night in Khatlon province's Shamsiddin Shohin district.

Tajikistan's National Security Committee stated five individuals from Afghanistan entered the country and refused border guards' orders to surrender, engaging in armed resistance while attempting to flee back.

Tajik authorities seized three Kalashnikov rifles, 150 bullets, 73 packages of hashish and opium, and other equipment from the clash site, according to the National Security Committee.

Afghanistan and Tajikistan share a 1,357-kilometer border that has seen increasing tensions and security incidents in recent years. The porous frontier has long been a route for drug trafficking from Afghanistan, which produces most of the world's opium, while Tajikistan serves as a key transit country for narcotics headed to Russia and Europe.

The three deceased individuals were identified as residents of Chahab district in Afghanistan's Takhar province, while two others escaped under cover of darkness back into the territory.

Relations between Tajikistan and the Taliban have been strained since August 2021, with Dushanbe refusing to recognize the Taliban government and expressing concerns about cross-border militant activity. Tajikistan has accused Afghanistan of harboring extremist groups and failing to secure the shared border, while the Taliban have denied these allegations and promised to investigate incidents, though results of such investigations are rarely made public.

Khatlon province in southern Tajikistan, bordering Afghanistan, has witnessed increased insecurity and armed clashes in recent months with multiple cross-border incidents reported.

Tajikistan has repeatedly claimed attacks originated from Afghan border areas, while the Taliban have announced investigations into these allegations but have not released any findings to date.
