Democrats Warn of Impeachment If Homeland Security Chief Is Not Removed
(MENAFN) Senior Democrats in the US House have warned President Donald Trump that they will move forward with impeachment proceedings unless Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is dismissed, following the fatal shooting of a man by federal agents in Minneapolis over the weekend.
In a joint statement issued Tuesday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and his leadership team condemned the conduct of the Department of Homeland Security, saying the violence associated with the agency “must end forthwith.” They demanded Noem’s immediate removal and cautioned that failure to act would leave them no choice but to pursue impeachment in the House. The situation, they said, could be handled “the easy way or the hard way.”
The warning comes amid intensified backlash after a majority of House Democrats backed articles of impeachment introduced earlier this month. Those articles stem from two separate incidents in Minneapolis in which US citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti were fatally shot by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. The shootings occurred during an expanded immigration enforcement campaign in the city, drawing sharp criticism and increasing pressure on DHS leadership.
Momentum behind the impeachment effort has continued to build. A campaign spearheaded by Representative Robin Kelly has now secured 162 Democratic co-sponsors, with 51 lawmakers joining after Pretti’s death. While no Republicans have formally endorsed impeachment, several have called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Anger over the federal operation has also fueled public unrest in Minneapolis, where demonstrations have continued for days. The protests erupted after DHS deployed thousands of agents to Minnesota as part of what officials describe as the largest interior immigration enforcement operation conducted to date, aimed at arresting individuals living in the country illegally.
