European Commission Pushes Google to Follow Digital Markets Act

(MENAFN) The European Commission announced Tuesday that it has opened two formal proceedings to help Google meet its obligations under the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), focusing on interoperability for artificial intelligence services and access to online search data.

The proceedings mark a formal step in the EU Commission’s regulatory dialogue with Google regarding compliance with specific DMA requirements.

The first set of proceedings addresses Google’s duty to provide third-party developers with free and effective interoperability for hardware and software features managed by its Android operating system. The Commission said this process will focus on functionalities used by Google’s own AI services, including Gemini, aiming to ensure that other AI service providers receive equally effective access.

According to the EU Commission, these measures are intended to give third-party developers a fair opportunity to innovate and compete in the rapidly evolving AI market on smart mobile devices.

The second set of proceedings concerns Google’s obligation to grant third-party search engine providers access to anonymized ranking, query, click, and view data held by Google Search under fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory conditions. The proceedings will examine the scope of data to be shared, anonymization methods, access conditions, and whether AI chatbot providers qualify for access.

The Commission emphasized that effective access would allow competing search providers to optimize their services and offer users real alternatives to Google Search.
