Saudi Arabia Stresses Importance of UAE Relations for Regional Stability
(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia on Monday emphasized that maintaining strong relations with the United Arab Emirates is “vital” for regional stability, following tensions between the two countries over Yemen.
"The UAE has decided to withdraw from Yemen completely, and I believe this is essential for the continuation of strong relations with the UAE," Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan said at a news conference in Warsaw alongside his Polish counterpart, Radoslaw Sikorski.
He added that “it is essential that there be positive and strong relations between Saudi Arabia and the UAE as a fundamental part of the Gulf Cooperation Council.” No response was immediately issued by the UAE regarding the statements.
The diplomatic strain followed last month’s capture of Yemen’s eastern provinces of Hadhramaut and Al-Mahra by the Southern Transitional Council (STC), a major separatist group, near the Saudi border. Riyadh accused Abu Dhabi of encouraging STC forces to carry out operations along the kingdom’s southern frontier, an allegation the UAE denied.
Earlier this month, Yemeni government forces, supported by the Saudi-led Arab coalition, regained control of the two provinces. The UAE subsequently withdrew all its troops from Yemen, ending its mission in the country. The confrontation marked one of the most significant rifts in years within Yemen’s anti-Houthi coalition.
