Minnesota Governor Demands Federal Immigration Officers Be Withdrawn

(MENAFN) Minnesota Governor Tim Walz appealed on Sunday to the Trump administration, urging it to pull back nearly 3,000 federal immigration enforcement personnel who were sent to the Minneapolis St. Paul region following the deadly shooting of American citizen Alex Pretti by a U.S. Border Patrol agent.

The deployment came after widespread unrest triggered by earlier enforcement actions.

Walz, speaking at a press briefing, emphasized that this is a critical moment for the country, saying, “I don't care if you are conservative and you are flying a Donald Trump flag, you're a Libertarian 'don't tread on me,' you're a Democratic Socialist of America, this is an inflection point, America.” His remarks referenced the controversial killing of 37 year old Pretti.

The governor argued that the shooting was not justified, pointing to footage that contradicts statements from senior officials including President Donald Trump, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) leaders, and federal law enforcement commanders, who claimed Pretti posed a threat to officers. Walz said the videos show Pretti did not attack federal personnel.
Walz also spoke about Pretti’s character and background, stressing that he was cherished by his loved ones and an exemplary citizen.

He described him as an “accomplished ICU nurse, skillful in ability to work with veterans, someone who's beloved by the community, (had) no criminal record, (and a) lawful firearms owner.”

Multiple recordings made by bystanders appear to challenge the federal government’s narrative of events. In the available footage, Pretti can be seen trying to help a female protester who had been pushed over by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent.

The videos then show a federal agent using pepper spray on Pretti before other agents force him to the ground, a legally owned firearm being taken from him, and ultimately one agent firing several shots that killed him.

Walz reiterated his position by referencing the widely circulated video evidence, telling reporters, “And you know what you saw.”

His comments underscored deepening tensions between state officials and federal immigration enforcement actions that have sparked protests and renewed debate over federal operations in Minnesota.
