Trump Says US to Oversee Venezuela’s Oil for Years

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump stated that he expects Washington to manage Venezuela’s oil resources for an extended period, insisting “we will rebuild it in a very profitable way.”

In an interview with a media outlet on Wednesday, Trump described Venezuela’s interim leadership—made up of former allies of captured President Nicolas Maduro—as “giving us everything that we feel is necessary” to satisfy US demands.

“We’re going to be using oil, and we’re going to be taking oil. We’re getting oil prices down, and we’re going to be giving money to Venezuela, which they desperately need,” Trump said.

He noted that his administration had already begun generating revenue by securing oil previously restricted under sanctions, referencing his Tuesday night announcement that Washington would acquire between 30 and 50 million barrels of heavy Venezuelan crude.

“The oil will take a while,” he added, reminding, “Don’t forget, they took the oil from us years ago.”

Trump’s remarks followed a statement by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio outlining a three‑step plan for Venezuela focused on stabilization, recovery, and transition.

Trump did not clarify why he recognized Vice President Delcy Rodriguez as Venezuela’s new leader instead of opposition figure Maria Corina Machado, though he said Rubio is in “constant communication” with her and the administration.

He also sidestepped questions about why Edmundo Gonzalez—whom the US had declared the winner of Venezuela’s 2024 elections—was not installed.
