Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Set for Portugal Visit

(MENAFN) Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will arrive in Portugal Monday for high-stakes diplomatic discussions aimed at elevating bilateral partnerships and regional collaboration.

Sources within the Turkish Foreign Ministry revealed that Fidan will conduct both private and inter-delegation sessions with Portuguese counterpart Paulo Rangel, focusing on measures to accelerate bilateral ties between the two nations.

The ministerial meetings are anticipated to reinforce coordination on regional security matters, expand trade and economic partnerships, and explore increased reciprocal investments. Discussions will also address joint ventures across critical sectors including energy, infrastructure, transportation, and port management operations.

Fidan plans to underscore the vital necessity of Türkiye's integration into EU-led security and defense mechanisms, initiatives, programs, and the bloc's broader industrial strategy, ministry sources confirmed.

Diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Portugal were formally established in 1926, following Portugal's adherence to relevant clauses of the Treaty of Lausanne. Both governments are organizing commemorative events in 2026 to celebrate the centennial of diplomatic ties.

Economic data shows bilateral trade reached $2.9 billion in 2024, climbing to $3.1 billion during the initial ten months of 2025.

Defense industry collaboration between the nations continues to intensify. On November 14, 2025, a steel-cutting ceremony in Istanbul launched construction of the first of two auxiliary replenishment and logistics vessels destined for Portugal—a pivotal advancement in sustained defense cooperation.
