Italy Keeps Watch on Developments After Venezuela Strikes

(MENAFN) Italy's foreign minister confirmed Saturday that Rome is actively tracking developments in Venezuela following US military operations, expressing heightened concern for the substantial Italian population residing there.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani disclosed on X, the US social media platform, "I'm following the situation with our diplomatic representation in Caracas, with particular attention to the Italian community. The Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is constantly informed."

Tajani further stated, "The Foreign Ministry's crisis unit is operational."

Approximately 160,000 Italian citizens currently reside within Venezuelan territory.

Venezuela's government earlier accused Washington of launching assaults on both civilian infrastructure and military targets across multiple provinces, prompting authorities to announce a nationwide state of emergency.

President Donald Trump acknowledged executing a "large scale" strike via his social platform Truth Social, claiming Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his spouse have been detained and transported out of Venezuelan territory.

The military action follows months of escalating confrontation with Washington, which alleged Maduro's involvement in narcotics trafficking operations. Maduro rejected accusations of cartel leadership and had previously signaled willingness to pursue diplomatic dialogue.
