IAEA chief says truce brokered at Zaporozhye Nuclear Plant

(MENAFN) The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has successfully negotiated a localized ceasefire between Russian and Ukrainian forces near the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, allowing essential repairs to power lines supplying the facility, according to agency chief Rafael Grossi.

Europe’s largest nuclear power station, under Russian control since 2022, has frequently lost external electricity due to attacks on nearby infrastructure. Russian authorities have accused Ukrainian forces of targeting the plant, forcing reliance on emergency power systems, while Ukraine has blamed Russia for cutting power lines serving the facility. These repeated disruptions have heightened concerns over nuclear safety.

In a social media post on Sunday, the IAEA stated that its on-site team is overseeing repair work expected to continue for several days, as part of ongoing efforts to mitigate the risk of a nuclear accident amid the conflict. Grossi expressed gratitude to both sides for agreeing to a temporary “window of silence” to restore electricity and reinforce safety at the plant.

The agency has consistently warned that military operations near nuclear facilities pose severe safety hazards and has urged all parties to protect critical nuclear infrastructure.

During a visit to Moscow in September for a global nuclear forum, Grossi addressed nuclear safety issues with Russian officials following a reported drone strike attempt by Ukraine on Russia’s Kursk II nuclear power station. That same day, he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who praised the IAEA’s work and assured continued cooperation.

US President Donald Trump also commented on the situation at the Zaporozhye plant after his meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Florida on Sunday.
