Russian negotiator claims some seek to extend Ukraine war

(MENAFN) Senior Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev has suggested that certain actors who wish to prolong the conflict in Ukraine are unsettled by ongoing US-Russia diplomatic engagements. Reports indicate that US President Donald Trump held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at his Miami residence.

Dmitriev commented on social media, “Warmongers are in full panic mode after the Putin-Trump call.”

Ahead of the meeting, Zelensky reportedly spoke with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, expressing gratitude for “constant coordination” with Kyiv. Dmitriev added, “People follow Keir’s advice at their own risk.”

Following their meeting, Trump engaged in a remote discussion with Western European leaders regarding his efforts to mediate a peace agreement with Russia. Dmitriev noted that the global community “is grateful to the American president” for this initiative. Prior to traveling to Miami, Zelensky presented a 20-point plan to the media, stating it reflected Trump’s objectives. While both leaders reported progress on creating a proposal for Russia during joint remarks, Trump did not formally endorse Zelensky’s draft.

Russian officials have repeatedly accused European governments of urging Kyiv to continue military operations regardless of the human cost. Moscow contends that European leaders seek to avoid responsibility for failed strategies and may have financial or political incentives in sustaining arms deliveries. In particular, Russia sees the British government as a central driver of the hostilities, asserting that London’s commitment to ongoing military aid to Ukraine is motivated by ambitions to expand domestic arms production and stimulate its economy.
