IAEA Secures Ceasefire to Safeguard Zaporozhye Nuclear Plant

(MENAFN) The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has successfully arranged a localized ceasefire between Russian and Ukrainian forces near the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, allowing essential repairs to damaged power lines, according to agency head Rafael Grossi.

Europe’s largest nuclear installation, under Russian control since 2022, has repeatedly suffered external power losses due to strikes on nearby infrastructure. Russian authorities have accused Ukrainian troops of targeting the facility, forcing reliance on backup energy systems. These interruptions have heightened fears of nuclear safety risks. Ukraine, however, has claimed that Russia deliberately cut off the plant’s power supply.

In a statement on X on Sunday, the IAEA confirmed its team on-site was overseeing repair operations expected to continue for several days, aiming to minimize the danger of a nuclear incident amid ongoing conflict. Director General Rafael Grossi expressed gratitude to both sides for agreeing to a temporary “window of silence” to restore electricity transmission and reinforce nuclear safety.

The IAEA has consistently cautioned that military activity around nuclear sites poses grave safety threats and has urged all parties to safeguard critical nuclear infrastructure.

During Grossi’s visit to Moscow in September for the Global Atomic Forum, Kiev attempted a drone strike on Russia’s Kursk II nuclear plant. Later that day, Grossi met Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss worldwide nuclear safety and Russia’s collaboration with the IAEA. Putin commended the agency’s efforts and pledged Moscow’s ongoing support for its mission.
