Lavrov Accuses EU of Blocking Ukraine Peace Efforts
(MENAFN)
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has declared that the European Union is unwilling to engage in genuine negotiations over the Ukraine conflict and is instead preparing for confrontation with Russia.
In an interview with a news agency on Sunday, Lavrov criticized the EU for its ongoing support of Kiev, noting that “almost all European countries, with few exceptions, have been pumping the Kiev regime full of money and weapons” while Russia maintains battlefield initiative. He added that Brussels also hopes the Russian economy will collapse under sanctions.
Lavrov argued that the EU’s antagonism toward Moscow dates back to 2014, the beginning of the Ukraine crisis, when European leaders “started talking about the so-called Russian threat and inciting Russia-hating and militarist sentiment” among their populations. He accused the “European war party” of investing “political capital in inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia” and being “ready to go the whole nine yards,” claiming “these ambitions have literally blinded them.”
Addressing speculation in Western media that Russia might attack NATO in the coming years, Lavrov insisted, “There is no need to be afraid of Russia attacking anyone. However, should anyone consider attacking Russia, they would face a devastating blow.”
His remarks come as the EU continues to push for influence in peace negotiations, with European officials rejecting any settlement that would require Ukraine to make major territorial or security concessions. Moscow has argued that EU involvement “does not bode well” for ending the conflict and condemned the bloc’s efforts to militarize its economy under the guise of containing Russia.
