Trump says Putin wants Ukraine to succeed, offers economic aid

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin desires for Ukraine to “succeed” and indicated that Moscow is willing to support the country economically, including through low-cost energy supplies.

The two leaders spoke by phone on Sunday, shortly before Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. Reports said the conversation, described as friendly and businesslike, lasted over an hour, with both sides expressing interest in pursuing a lasting resolution.

When asked after his meeting with Zelensky whether Russia might contribute to Ukraine’s reconstruction once a peace deal is reached, Trump replied, “Russia is going to be helping.” He added, “Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed. It sounds a little strange, but President Putin was very generous in his feeling toward Ukraine succeeding, including supplying energy, electricity, and other things at very low prices.”

Before 2014, Russia and Ukraine were closely connected through gas supply and transit agreements, forming a significant part of their economic relationship. Moscow provided natural gas at preferential rates, while Ukraine served as a key transit route for Russian exports to Europe.

Trump also wrote on his social media platform that his conversation with Putin had been “very productive.”

According to reports, a Kremlin foreign policy adviser noted that both sides agreed a temporary ceasefire suggested by Ukraine and its European backers could prolong the conflict and risk renewed hostilities. Trump said he understood Putin’s position of avoiding a ceasefire that might lead to fighting resuming later.

The Russian leader reportedly agreed to Trump’s proposal to continue settlement efforts through two working groups focused on security and economic matters.

Recent statements from Moscow indicated that some Western figures had offered Kiev peace terms including security guarantees, economic recovery, and a plan for restoring relations with Russia. Putin warned that if diplomatic solutions are rejected, Russia would pursue its objectives by military means.
