Arab, Islamic, African nations reject Israel’s recognition of Somaliland

(MENAFN) Representatives from 21 Arab, Islamic, and African countries strongly rejected Israel’s move to recognize Somaliland, Somalia’s breakaway region, as an independent state on Friday, citing violations of international law and threats to regional stability, according to reports.

A joint statement from the countries’ foreign ministers described the recognition as a “serious precedent” that endangers “international peace and security.” The statement added that Israel’s action reflects “full and blatant disregard to international law” and warned of its potential “serious repercussions … on peace and security in the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea.”

In the statement, the countries condemned the decision “in the strongest terms,” emphasizing that it contravenes “the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter, which explicitly stipulates the imperative of protecting the sovereignty of states and their territorial integrity, and reflects Israel's expansionist” approach. They also reaffirmed unwavering support for Somalia’s sovereignty, asserting their “unequivocal rejection of any measures that undermine the unity of Somalia, its territorial integrity or its sovereignty over its entire territory.”

The statement further rejected any connection between Israel’s recognition of Somaliland and attempts to forcibly displace the Palestinian people, declaring such actions “unequivocally rejected in any form as a matter of principle.”

Israel’s recognition of Somaliland makes it the first country in the world to do so, drawing widespread condemnation from numerous nations in Africa and the Middle East, including Türkiye, which joined the statement issued on Saturday.

Since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991, Somaliland has operated as a de facto autonomous region, with its own political, administrative, and security structures, but lacking official international recognition. The Somali government continues to consider Somaliland an integral part of its territory and regards any direct dealings with the region as violations of its sovereignty and national unity.
