IAEA plans to do repairs close to Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

(MENAFN) The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced on Sunday that repair work has begun near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) following a local ceasefire facilitated by the UN nuclear watchdog.

In a statement shared on X, quoting IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, the agency said that “essential power line repairs” are now underway close to the facility. An IAEA team is monitoring the operation, which is expected to take several days.

The agency said the work forms part of ongoing efforts to reduce the risk of a nuclear accident amid the ongoing military conflict. Grossi expressed appreciation to both Russia and Ukraine for agreeing to the temporary halt in hostilities.

“Grossi thanks both sides for agreeing to this new temporary ‘window of silence’ to restore power transmission between the switchyards of the ZNPP and the Zaporizhzhia Thermal Power Plant, thereby strengthening nuclear safety,” the statement said.

Earlier this month, the IAEA reported that power transmission between the ZNPP switchyard and the Zaporizhzhia Thermal Power Plant (ZTPP) switchyard, via an autotransformer, had been disrupted.

According to the agency, an investigation by the ZNPP found damage to the transmission line between the autotransformer and the ZTPP switchyard, which was reportedly caused by military activity. The IAEA said on Dec. 19 that access to the damaged area could not initially be granted due to security concerns, prompting the plant to explore alternative repair options.

The situation around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant — Europe’s largest nuclear facility and one of the world’s ten biggest — remains highly tense, with ongoing fears of a potential nuclear incident as Moscow and Kyiv continue to accuse each other of attacks in the vicinity of the site.
