Arab League urges UN to oppose Israel’s recognition of Somaliland

(MENAFN) The Arab League on Sunday called on the UN Security Council to take a firm stance against Israel’s recognition of the breakaway Somali region of Somaliland, warning that the move poses a threat to international peace and security.

The appeal was made in a final communiqué issued after an emergency meeting in Cairo, convened at the request of Somalia and supported by several Arab League member states. The meeting was held at the level of permanent representatives.

According to the statement, the Arab League “strongly condemned Israel’s recognition of the northwestern Somali region known as Somaliland,” describing the move as an attempt to advance unacceptable political, security and economic agendas.

The organization reaffirmed its “categorical rejection” of any consequences arising from the recognition, particularly measures that could facilitate plans for the forced displacement of Palestinians or allow the use of northern Somali ports for the establishment of military bases.

The meeting tasked Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit with formally addressing the presidency of the UN Security Council, the UN secretary-general, and the chairperson of the African Union Commission, urging them to adopt a “firm position” against Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, which it said constitutes a threat to international peace and security.

Israel on Friday became the first country to recognize Somaliland as a sovereign state, prompting strong condemnation from Türkiye — a close ally of Somalia — as well as from several countries across Africa and the Middle East.
