UNRWA Warns of Gaza Civilian’s Suffering Amid Winter Storms

(MENAFN) Severe winter conditions in the Gaza Strip are worsening the plight of civilians after more than two years of Israeli military operations, according to the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).

“More rain. More human misery, despair and death,” Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini wrote on the US platform X, describing the dire situation. He noted that Gazans “are surviving in flimsy, waterlogged tents and among ruins,” while stressing that humanitarian aid “is not being allowed in at the scale required.”

Lazzarini emphasized that UNRWA “could multiply these efforts tomorrow if aid flowed in,” underscoring the urgent need for greater access to relief supplies.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian government announced that approximately 200,000 prefabricated housing units are urgently required to address the humanitarian needs of displaced families facing extreme weather.

In a statement, the government’s operations room reported that the latest storm system had destroyed and flooded thousands of tents across the enclave, further aggravating the humanitarian crisis.

Since Saturday, Gaza has been battered by a polar low-pressure system—the third of the winter season—bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds that have intensified the suffering of displaced communities.
