Russian court convicts ex-Foreign Ministry employee over treason
(MENAFN) A Russian court has convicted ex-Foreign Ministry employee Arseny Konovalov of treason for allegedly providing classified information to US intelligence, the Federal Security Service (FSB) announced Friday.
The Moscow City Court sentenced Konovalov to 12 years in a high-security penal colony and imposed a fine of 100,000 rubles (approximately $1,260).
Konovalov, 38, served as Second Secretary at Russia’s Consulate General in Houston from 2014 to 2017. Video footage of his March 2024 arrest on suspicion of collaborating with foreign intelligence shows him acknowledging the charges when asked by an officer, “Do you know what happened?” to which he replied, “yes.”
The FSB stated that Konovalov “voluntarily” transferred classified information obtained during his US posting to foreign intelligence operatives in exchange for payment. The investigation was conducted under Article 275 of the Russian Criminal Code, which pertains to high treason. Authorities did not disclose the specific details of the information he allegedly shared.
This case is part of a series of recent treason convictions in Russia, often linked to Ukraine. Earlier this week, a 38-year-old man in Kaluga was sentenced to 13 years for passing details about Russian air defense deployments to Kyiv. In early December, Artem Khoroshilov, formerly with the General Physics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, received a 21-year sentence for treason, including charges of funding Ukrainian entities, hacking critical systems, and planning sabotage on Russian infrastructure.
