Moscow reveals US, Russia held talks over phone to discuss deal

(MENAFN) The Kremlin stated on Friday that officials from the Russian and US presidential administrations have held discussions by phone regarding a possible settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, following recent consultations held in the United States, according to official statements.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that a senior aide to the Russian president and several officials from the US administration reviewed a draft peace proposal during a telephone conversation.

Explaining how the contact came about, Peskov said, "After Dmitriev briefed the president on the results of his trip to America and his contacts with the Americans, this information was analyzed, at the instruction of President Putin, there was a contact between representatives of the administrations of Russia and the United States,"

He added that the Kremlin carefully reviewed information provided by the Russian president’s special envoy following his visit to the US.

As for the outcome of the exchange, Peskov noted that both sides "agreed to continue the dialogue."

Talks focused on a Ukrainian settlement were held in Miami over the weekend, involving representatives from the US side and a Russian envoy participating in discussions related to the peace initiative.

Peskov declined to comment on how Moscow assesses the document that the Russian presidential representative brought back from the US after the Miami talks.

Addressing the matter, he said, "We still believe that disseminating this information at this time could negatively affect the negotiation process,"

The Kremlin spokesperson also responded to remarks made by an adviser to the Ukrainian president, who suggested that Ukraine lacks the financial resources to organize elections. Peskov said Moscow cannot determine whether those remarks reflect Kyiv’s official stance.

He added, "We have heard no official statements from Kyiv. But it is an undeniable fact that Kyiv resorts to various tricks to obtain money from the West,"

Separately, when asked about reports of an increase in Japan’s military budget, Peskov cautioned that higher defense spending in the Asia-Pacific region should be approached carefully to avoid worsening regional tensions.

He said, "I cannot give you an exact figure; I simply do not know how much they had last year or how significant this increase is. But undoubtedly, any increase in military expenditure in the region should be carried out with extreme caution to prevent further escalation of tensions,"
