Trump says deal to end Russia-Ukraine war should go through US
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said any agreement to end the war between Russia and Ukraine cannot be finalized without the consent of Washington, as he prepares to hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Florida, according to reports.
Emphasizing the US role in the process, Trump said, “He (Zelenskyy) doesn’t have anything until I approve it,” speaking ahead of the expected meeting on Sunday.
He added that he was interested in reviewing Ukraine’s position, saying, “We’ll see what he’s got,” while expressing confidence about the outcome of the talks. “I think it’s going to go good with him.”
Trump also expressed optimism regarding parallel contacts with Moscow, stating that discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin would likewise “go good” and noting that he expects to speak with the Russian leader “soon.”
Earlier, Zelenskyy confirmed plans to meet Trump to discuss a proposed roadmap aimed at ending the conflict, which would include security guarantees as well as an economic component.
He said the main objective of the talks would be to finalize a framework and a "schedule" for bringing the war to a close.
Zelenskyy added that negotiations have entered the "next level," arguing that progress now depends on direct engagement between presidents to speed up a resolution.
Meanwhile, Moscow has indicated that Russian and US officials have agreed to continue dialogue regarding a potential settlement to the conflict.
