Israeli court permits home demolitions in Tulkarem
(MENAFN) An Israeli court on Friday approved the demolition of 25 residential buildings in the Nur Shams refugee camp in Tulkarem, West Bank, despite objections from Palestinian owners, a human rights group reported.
The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel (Adalah) said the Supreme Court rejected a petition challenging military orders for the razing of the buildings. The court’s decision relied on classified materials submitted by state prosecutors in coordination with military intelligence, which were not shared with the petitioners or their lawyers but deemed sufficient to justify the demolitions.
Adalah noted that authorities acknowledged there was no immediate security threat and that the area had seen no combat for over a year. Nevertheless, the court sided with the army, emphasizing that military commanders possess broad authority in such matters and that judicial intervention is only allowed in exceptional cases, which it ruled were not applicable.
The demolitions are not scheduled to begin before December 27, 2025.
The rights group warned that the ruling entrenches forced displacement prohibited under international humanitarian law, stressing that residents are protected civilians and their property is legally safeguarded. Adalah has filed four recent petitions against collective demolition orders in the Jenin, Nur Shams, and Tulkarem refugee camps, all of which the Supreme Court declined to block, citing military authority.
Earlier this year, the Israeli army intensified operations in northern West Bank refugee camps, including raids, demolitions, displacement, and settlement expansion, following the outbreak of the war in Gaza in October 2023. These actions are widely seen as moves toward formal annexation of the occupied territory, which would undermine the prospects for a two-state solution.
Since October 2023, Palestinian figures indicate that Israeli forces and illegal settlers have killed at least 1,103 Palestinians in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, injured nearly 11,000, and detained around 21,000. In a landmark ruling in July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and called for the evacuation of all West Bank and East Jerusalem settlements.
