UN peacekeeper is wounded in southern Lebanon amid Israeli gunfire

(MENAFN) A United Nations peacekeeper sustained minor injuries after being exposed to gunfire originating from Israeli military positions and a nearby explosive blast in southern Lebanon, according to official statements released on Friday.

Reports said that intense heavy machine gun fire from Israeli positions located south of the Blue Line struck close to a peacekeeping patrol that was checking a roadblock in the village of Bastarra. Shortly afterward, a grenade detonated in the same area.

“The sound of the gunfire and the explosion left one peacekeeper slightly injured with ear concussion,” the statement said.

No material damage was recorded as a result of the incident.

In a separate development, another patrol conducting what was described as “a routine operational task” in the village of Kfar Shouba reported additional machine gun fire coming from the Israeli side, landing very close to its location.

Officials noted that Israeli forces had been notified ahead of time about the patrol movements, “following usual practice for patrols in sensitive areas near the Blue Line.”

Incidents occurring on or near peacekeeping forces were described as “serious violations of Security Council resolution 1701,” with renewed calls urging the Israeli army “to cease aggressive behaviour and attacks on or near peacekeepers working for peace and stability along the Blue Line.”

A ceasefire has been in effect in Lebanon since November 2024, following more than a year of hostilities that resulted in over 4,000 deaths and left around 17,000 people injured amid the wider Israeli war in Gaza.

Despite the truce, reports from Lebanon’s Health Ministry indicate that at least 335 people have been killed and 973 others wounded in Israeli strikes since the ceasefire came into force.

Under the terms of the agreement, Israeli forces were expected to fully withdraw from southern Lebanon by January 2025. However, reports indicate that the withdrawal was only partial, with Israeli troops continuing to hold positions at five military outposts along the border.
