Senior Russian army officer gets killed in car bombing in Moscow
(MENAFN) A senior Russian military officer was killed in a car bombing in Moscow on Monday, as stated by reports from the country’s Investigative Committee.
Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, who headed the Operational Training Department of the Russian General Staff, died from injuries sustained in the blast, the committee said in a Telegram statement.
“According to investigators, on the morning of Dec. 22, an explosive device planted under the bottom of a car was detonated on Yasenevaya Street in Moscow,” the statement added.
A criminal investigation has been opened, with authorities pursuing multiple leads regarding the motive behind the attack. “Investigators are pursuing various theories regarding the murder. One of them is that the crime was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services,” the statement said. Ukrainian officials have not commented on this allegation.
This incident follows a series of high-profile explosions targeting Russian military leaders. In April, Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a similar attack in the Moscow region, which Russian authorities attributed to Ukraine’s Security Service, although Kyiv did not confirm involvement.
In December of the previous year, Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Protection Defense Troops, was also killed in an explosion in Moscow. Multiple Ukrainian media outlets, citing sources, reported that Kirillov’s death was the result of a “special operation” conducted by Ukraine’s Security Service.
