Russia's Makhachkala Seaport To Boost Central Asia Ties In 2026

(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan, January 9. Makhachkala Seaport plans to strengthen cooperation with Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan in 2026 to redirect Chinese cargo flows to the Trans-Caspian route, Trend reports.

The initiative is part of Russia's broader shift in cargo traffic toward eastern and southern directions, with Iran, India, China, and Central Asian countries identified as key partners.

Within the framework of the North-South transport corridor, the port has also reduced costs for multimodal container shipments along the Mumbai-Makhachkala route by half, improving the competitiveness of the corridor.

Looking ahead, Makhachkala Seaport aims to launch ferry services linking Turkmenistan, Iran, and Kazakhstan by 2030, a move expected to significantly expand transport capabilities across the Caspian region.

Makhachkala Seaport is Russia's only deepwater, ice-free port on the Caspian Sea and serves as a strategic transport hub connecting southern Russia with Central Asia, Iran, and the South Caucasus.
