Türkiye Stresses International Collaboration for Syria’s Reconstruction

(MENAFN) Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated on Saturday that global cooperation is essential for Syria’s recovery, as investment slowly begins to re-emerge despite the extensive devastation caused by years of conflict.

Speaking to a local television network, Fidan highlighted that collaborative initiatives involving regional nations alongside European and US allies are contributing to the foundational work of rebuilding the country, even though significant obstacles remain.

“Investments in Syria are gradually starting to take shape, but the scale of destruction is enormous,” he noted.

“There are people returning, and those returning need infrastructure that will allow them to live and access basic services.”

Responding to European and US criticism suggesting that the current Syrian administration lacks full control, Fidan asserted that Türkiye believes authority has largely been established, although certain areas still pose challenges.

He referenced territories governed by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), emphasizing that unresolved issues there must be addressed in accordance with the March 10 agreement—a pact designed to integrate the SDF into state structures and prevent further conflict.

Fidan urged the SDF to stop postponing progress by citing threats from ISIS or other reasons, stressing that the matter involves more than just internal security.

“This is not only about Syria’s security; it is also about Türkiye,” he explained. “These groups are extensions of the PKK, and there is an ongoing process with the PKK that includes a decision to dissolve. We want to see the impact of that decision not only within our borders but beyond them as well.”
