Floods in northern Iraq kill two, injure five

(MENAFN) Heavy flooding and flash torrents swept through Iraq’s northern Sulaymaniyah province on Tuesday, leaving at least two dead and five others injured, local authorities said. The regional Civil Defense Directorate reported that the victims were caught in rapidly rising waters in the Chamchamal district.

In the Shorash sub-district, a school wall collapsed under the force of the torrents, claiming the lives of a 70-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman. Civil defense teams have been working tirelessly to rescue stranded residents and evacuate affected areas.

Authorities warned that unstable weather and additional rainfall could exacerbate the situation, urging residents to remain cautious. Emergency services have mobilized throughout the region to provide assistance, while local communities are grappling with blocked roads, damaged infrastructure, and disrupted daily life due to the floods.
