Trump to conduct final interviews for next federal reserve chair

(MENAFN) According to general reports released Tuesday, US President Donald Trump is preparing to conduct the last round of discussions this week as he moves toward selecting the next head of the Federal Reserve.

Sources familiar with the process indicated that Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent plan to meet with former Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh on Wednesday. These sources also suggested that National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett is still viewed as the leading contender, largely due to his alignment with Trump’s preference for lower interest rates and wider import tariffs.

When reporters asked Trump about the selection process while traveling on Air Force One, he replied, “We’re going to be looking at a couple of different people, but I have a pretty good idea who I want.”

For months, Trump has pressed the central bank to reduce interest rates and has argued that choosing a new chair to replace Jerome Powell—whose term ends in May 2026—offers him his strongest opportunity to reshape the institution. He has repeatedly criticized Powell for what he sees as excessive caution regarding rate cuts and has implied that Powell’s successor should take a much more aggressive approach toward lowering rates.
