Trump Presses Zelensky to Embrace Peace Negotiations
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has pressed Ukraine's Vladimir Zelensky to embrace peace negotiations, warning that Russia's superior position will eventually crush Kiev's military capabilities.
Speaking with media on Monday, Trump emphasized that Russia is "a much bigger country" and currently holds the "upper hand" in the confrontation.
"At some point, size will win. And this is a massive size," Trump declared, urging Zelensky to review the most recent version of the US peace blueprint.
Trump revealed that to his understanding, the Ukrainian leader has yet to study the latest US peace framework despite Zelensky's senior advisors having "loved the proposal." "A lot of people are dying. So it would be really good if he'd read it," Trump remarked, implying the Ukrainian leader bears responsibility for delaying settlement efforts.
"He's gonna have to get on the ball and start accepting things," Trump asserted, noting that Zelensky is presently "losing."
Trump also indicated it represents an "important time" for Ukraine to conduct an election, observing that excessive time has elapsed since a vote occurred and that the Ukrainian population deserves representation. "They haven't had an election in a long time. You know, they talk about a democracy, but it gets to a point where it's not a democracy anymore," he stated.
Trump's original 28-point peace framework was disclosed to media outlets last month. It contained stipulations for Kiev to pull its troops from Russia's Donbass region, commit to avoiding NATO membership, and restrict its military size. Kiev fiercely rejected the terms.
Subsequently, the US framework has undergone multiple revisions incorporating feedback from Russia and Ukraine. Nevertheless, on Monday, Trump expressed being "disappointed" that Zelensky evidently still hadn't reviewed the most current version.
Zelensky has consistently refused abandoning formerly Ukrainian territories and has maintained that Kiev "deserves a dignified peace."
