Putin Accepts Parts Of U.S. Proposals In Bid To Restart Ukraine Peace Talks: Kremlin
The Kremlin said on Wednesday that President Vladimir Putin has accepted parts of a U.S. proposal aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, in what appears to be the most significant opening toward renewed diplomacy since the conflict began.
Reuters reported that Moscow is prepared to hold further talks with U.S. negotiators, though Russian officials cautioned that discussions remain preliminary and no final agreement has been reached.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the remarks followed extended talks in Moscow between Putin and a U.S. special envoy, identified as Donald Trump's son-in-law and former White House adviser. He described the meeting as the first direct exchange of views between the two sides.
According to Peskov, some elements of Washington's proposal were deemed acceptable, while others were rejected. He said disagreement at this stage was expected and called the process“a natural part of trying to find a solution.” He added that Russia appreciated Trump's efforts but would not provide ongoing public updates on negotiations.
A 28-point U.S. peace outline circulated last month drew concern from Ukrainian and European officials, who said parts of the draft appeared to align with Moscow's demands, including territorial concessions.
Meanwhile, Russia's public acknowledgment of the U.S. plan may reflect shifting calculations as the war grinds into a third winter, with both sides facing mounting battlefield fatigue and economic pressure. They note, however, that any breakthrough remains uncertain given wide gaps over territory, security guarantees and Ukraine's future alignment with NATO.
Diplomats say the coming weeks may determine whether exploratory contacts evolve into formal talks or stall as both sides continue preparing for further military operations.
