Trump Defends Tariffs as Source of U.S. Strength
(MENAFN) President Donald Trump has asserted that the United States possesses “all the cards” due to his tariff policies, insisting that without them the nation “would be a poor and pathetic laughingstock again.”
In April, he enacted broad import levies impacting numerous countries, pointing to what he described as unfair trade disparities.
Trump invoked the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to justify these actions, a statute enabling a president to restrict or halt global commerce and monetary dealings during a proclaimed national emergency tied to external threats.
The initiative has faced criticism from several legislators who contend that it may damage the nation’s internal economy.
Posting on his Truth Social account on Saturday, Trump reiterated that “Tariffs have made our Country Rich, Strong, Powerful, and Safe…, and because of what I have set in place, WE HAVE ALL THE CARDS.”
The former president cautioned that “Evil, American hating Forces are fighting us at the United States Supreme Court.”
Earlier in the month, he forecast a looming “national security catastrophe” should his tariff measures be undone, claiming potential national losses could surpass $2 trillion.
Toward the end of summer, the US Court of Appeals determined that Trump had exceeded his legal authority by applying tariffs under the IEEPA, emphasizing that such powers rest solely with Congress.
However, the court refrained from fully overturning the tariffs while awaiting a definitive judgment from the Supreme Court.
