Pope Leo XIV Participates in Nicaea Council Commemoration Event

(MENAFN) Pope Leo XIV, supreme pontiff of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican, participated Friday in commemorative events honoring the 1,700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea in Türkiye's northwestern Bursa province's Iznik district.

The papal visit to Türkiye encompassed prior engagements in Ankara and Istanbul before the pontiff journeyed to Iznik for the milestone observance.

Characterizing the anniversary as a significant occasion, Pope Leo stressed the council's lasting relevance for Christianity.

He declared that amid a world ravaged by violence and strife, populations globally demand peace and reconciliation, asserting that religion should never serve as justification for warfare, brutality, or any manifestation of extremism or fanaticism.

The pontiff additionally thanked Patriarch Bartholomew for spearheading the commemoration while delivering messages emphasizing unity, reconciliation, and peace.

Upon completing his Iznik agenda, the pope was scheduled to transit back to Istanbul before continuing to Beirut, Lebanon's capital, on Sunday.

The historic First Council of Nicaea in 325 AD established foundational Christian doctrine and remains one of Christianity's most consequential ecclesiastical gatherings, with the anniversary drawing international religious leaders to the ancient city.
