Federal Judge Tosses Cases Against Comey, James

(MENAFN) A U.S. federal judge dismissed the legal proceedings targeting former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James on Monday, ruling that the prosecutor handling the indictments was appointed unlawfully.

Judge Cameron McGowan Currie stated in her order that the appointment of President Donald Trump’s former attorney, Lindsey Halligan, as interim prosecutor for the Eastern District of Virginia was invalid.

“All actions flowing from Ms. Halligan’s defective appointment, including securing and signing Mr. Comey’s indictment, constitute unlawful exercises of executive power and must be set aside,” Judge Currie emphasized.

Comey expressed relief, stating, “I’m grateful that the court ended the case against me, which was a prosecution based on malevolence and incompetence.” James also commented, saying she felt “heartened by today’s victory and grateful for the prayers and support.”

Trump has repeatedly accused both Comey and James of participating in what he termed a politically motivated “witch hunt.” He claimed that Comey led the “Russiagate hoax,” while James unjustly targeted the Trump Organization with fraud charges.

In September, a federal grand jury indicted Comey for allegedly providing false statements during a 2020 Senate hearing about the probe into supposed Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, which Trump won.

Despite the investigation ultimately finding no evidence of collusion, Comey defended the inquiry as “appropriate and essential.”

The following month, a federal grand jury charged James with mortgage fraud.
