Sudan army chief denounces US-backed truce plan
(MENAFN) Sudan’s Sovereign Council Chairman and army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, sharply criticized on Sunday the humanitarian truce proposal delivered by the Quad Mechanism through the US president’s adviser for Middle East and Africa affairs, Massad Boulos.
Burhan described the document as “the worst ever submitted,” claiming it undermines the armed forces, calls for the dissolution of all security agencies, and leaves the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in control of their territories. He voiced his concerns during a meeting with senior army officers ranked brigadier general and above.
He did not provide further details of the paper but emphasized that if mediation continues in this direction, it would be considered non-neutral. Burhan said the US envoy “speaks as if he wants to impose certain dictates on us” and expressed fears that Boulos could become an obstacle to the peace sought by all Sudanese.
Burhan accused the US envoy of making threats, alleging that the Sudanese government obstructs humanitarian convoys and has used chemical weapons, and dismissed these claims as unacceptable. He insisted that the Sudanese government’s own roadmap should guide the peace process.
The Quad (Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, and the United States) previously called for an initial three-month humanitarian truce to allow urgent aid to reach civilians, paving the way for a permanent ceasefire, followed by a nine-month transitional process toward a civilian government with broad legitimacy.
Burhan also rejected US allegations of Muslim Brotherhood influence within the army, calling such claims a “scare tactic” meant to influence international actors. He emphasized that the military can reform and restructure itself without external interference.
He further accused the RSF of genocide and ethnic cleansing, noting that some unnamed countries and political actors are providing unacceptable support to the paramilitary group.
Burhan stressed: “We are not advocates of war, nor do we reject peace, but no one can threaten us or impose conditions on us.”
Since April 2023, the Sudanese army and RSF have been engaged in a violent conflict that has killed thousands and displaced millions, despite multiple regional and international mediation attempts.
