Spain advances to 2026 FIFA World Cup after draw with Türkiye


(MENAFN) Spain clinched qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a 2-2 stalemate against Türkiye on Tuesday.

The match, held at La Cartuja Stadium in Seville, saw Spain take an early lead as Dani Olmo scored in the fourth minute. Türkiye responded just before halftime when Deniz Gul equalized in the 42nd minute. Early in the second half, Salih Ozcan put Türkiye ahead with a long-range strike in the 54th minute. Spain managed to level the score again in the 62nd minute thanks to Mikel Oyarzabal, and the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

With this result, Spain accumulated 16 points, securing the top position in Group E. Türkiye sits just behind with 13 points from six matches.

Türkiye will now enter the World Cup playoff semifinals, where they could face Sweden, Romania, North Macedonia, or Northern Ireland. The draw to determine the playoff matchups is scheduled to take place in Zurich on Thursday.
