Nearly Thirty Killed in Rebel Raid on Health Center in DRC

(MENAFN) At least 29 people — among them patients — were killed in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo after a brutal overnight assault widely attributed to Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels, local officials said Monday.

Authorities and residents discovered 23 bodies at the Byambwe health center in Lubero territory, North Kivu province, following the Friday night attack, territory administrator Col. Alain Kiwewa told reporters. He confirmed that the dead included 11 women, and that additional villagers were killed in three surrounding communities.

The Byambwe facility functions as a major referral center for local residents, including families uprooted by persistent violence in the region.

According to local media, attackers also torched parts of the clinic and destroyed several nearby homes.

“Attacks on health facilities are a crime against humanity. These despicable acts must not go unpunished,” Kiwewa said, urging civilians to assist ongoing joint military operations by the Congolese and Ugandan armies aimed at dismantling the rebel group.

The assault comes just weeks after roughly 20 civilians were killed and several more wounded in another attack in the same area, also blamed on the ADF.

Joint cross-border operations between Ugandan and Congolese forces against the ADF have been underway since 2021. The group, active for years in eastern Congo, is affiliated with ISIS (Daesh).
