Doha, Qatar: The Qatar Metabolic Institute (QMI) at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has strengthened its dedicated Type 1 Diabetes Service, supporting individuals living with Type 1 diabetes to manage their condition confidently at home, at work and in everyday life.

Type 1 diabetes, which usually begins in childhood, requires continuous daily management, and Qatar continues to observe a rising incidence among young people, highlighting the importance of early support, structured education, mental well-being services and access to advanced treatment throughout adulthood.

As the sole public provider of secondary and specialised diabetes services in Qatar, HMC serves as the national referral centre for adults diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, ensuring continuous, coordinated and high-quality care across the country.

The service is delivered in line with the Qatar National Clinical Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Type 1 Diabetes in Adults and the Elderly, and incorporates advanced diabetes technologies such as insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems and hybrid closed-loop devices.

Care is delivered across HMC's JCI-accredited National Diabetes Centres and provided through a multidisciplinary team of endocrinologists, diabetes educators, dietitians, psychologists, podiatrists, clinical pharmacists, ophthalmologists and specialist nurses, supporting both physical and emotional well-being.

A structured transition pathway supports young people as they move from paediatric diabetes services into HMC's specialised adult Type 1 clinics, ensuring continuity during this important stage of life.

The DAFNE (Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating) education programme which has been established as DAFNE-Q (DAFNE Qatar) at Hamad General Hospital and Mesaieed General Hospital, in collaboration with DAFNE UK, provides individuals with the skills to adjust insulin safely while maintaining normal eating patterns, activity and daily routines. This approach promotes independence, confidence and lifelong self-management.

Supporting this year's global World Diabetes Day theme Diabetes and Well-Being, with an emphasis on well-being in the workplace, QMI has also introduced staff wellness DAFNE sessions for HMC employees living with Type 1 diabetes.

To mark the day, QMI led a week-long awareness and education campaign which reached more than 2,000 people across Qatar. Activities included the 4th Diabetes Care Symposium at the University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) delivered in collaboration with QMI at HMC.
