(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres congratulated the Iraqi people on Tuesday for conducting their parliamentary elections and lauded the country’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) for guaranteeing their smooth execution.

“The Secretary-General welcomes the generally calm and orderly conduct of the polls and trusts that political stakeholders will maintain the spirit of peace and respect for the electoral process as results are awaited,” Guterres stated in a release from his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric.

He highlighted the significance of a “timely and peaceful government formation process” that reflects the desires of the Iraqi population and fulfills their expectations for stability and growth.

The UN leader reiterated the organization’s ongoing commitment to supporting Iraq in strengthening its democratic achievements and establishing a “peaceful and prosperous future.”

Guterres also expressed gratitude for the efforts of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), whose electoral support mandate is concluding after more than twenty years of service.

According to the IHEC, over 12 million Iraqis, including security forces and displaced individuals, participated in Monday’s parliamentary election, representing a turnout exceeding 55%. The official results are anticipated within 24 hours.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani praised the election as a “remarkable step forward toward greater stability and progress.”
