Thailand Suspends“Peace Agreement” With Cambodia Signed Two Weeks Ago With Trump
According to a government spokesperson, Thailand claimed several of its soldiers were wounded by a landmine explosion near the Cambodian border in Sisaket Province. As reported by the Bangkok Post, the soldiers were injured while on patrol, and one of them lost a leg.
Cambodia stated that it remains committed to the agreement, which was intended to ensure lasting peace after the border clashes in July that left more than 40 people dead. However, on Monday, Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said at a press conference that he agreed with the position of the country's Ministry of Defence that the security threat has not actually diminished.
The border conflict between the two sides has continued for more than a century, dating back to the demarcation of the border after the French occupation of Cambodia. The dispute has resulted in repeated clashes over the years, and the latest one in July forced 300,000 people to flee their homes.
The sides later signed an agreement, which Thailand refused to call a peace deal, in October during a ceremony attended by the U.S. President in Malaysia. Both parties agreed to withdraw their heavy weapons from the disputed area and to establish a temporary observer group to monitor it. The next step was expected to be the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers held in Thailand.
